Abacus Learning for Adult Brain Health (ALABH)

Every 3 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with a type of dementia, like Alzheimer’s Disease. While it is not a normal part of aging, increasing age is the most significant risk factor for developing brain diseases.

Years of research have shown us that there are many things that we can do to maintain the
health of our brains. Engaging in mentally stimulating and challenging activities that involve new learning and provide opportunities for solving unfamiliar tasks is one way to promote the growth and development of your brain cells and keep them working well throughout life.

Learning the abacus in adulthood, especially if you have not yet done so nor mastered the skill when you were younger, meets the criteria of a perfect brain exercise that could potentially
lower your chances of having dementia in the future.

Other benefits for adults may include:
– Gains in attention, mental arithmetic/calculation skills and processing speed
– Maintenance of general cognitive abilities and the optimal functioning of the whole brain
– Improvement of visual-spatial and working memory abilities
– Social interaction and engagement
– Boosts in self-efficacy and self-confidence
